Kanhaiya Kumari was born in an Indian prison where he was held until he was six years old. When he was finally released he was placed in a juvenile home. He never stopped thinking of his mother, Vijaya.

She was left in prison for a crime she said she never did. But since she couldn’t afford the bail to go to court, she remained in jail. Vijaya’s only contact with the outside world was a single photo of her son. When Kanhaiya got to be eighteen, he went to work in a garment factory to earn the money to get his mother’s bail.
Finally, Kanhaiya had saved the money for his mother’s bail, which she had so desperately needed for nineteen years. He also hired a lawyer who secured Vijaya’s release. The judge was so upset by her case he ordered a review of all cases of the many thousands who may be “lost” in Indian jails like Vijaya.
